After playing a variety of roles, Bengali beauty Rani Mukerji will be seen in a completely different role in Rajkumar Gupta’s ‘No One Killed Jessica’ where she portrays a journalist who smokes cigarettes and hurls abuses. The film, produced by UTV Spotboy, will release on January 7, 2011. Rajkumar Gupta has directed the movie.
“Director Rajkumar Gupta wanted me to give the impression of a strong journalist and to represent media as it is. I have seen a few female reporters smoke. I am just playing you all...so you can’t put me in trouble for this,” Rani, a non-smoker, told reporters at the launch of the first look of the film.
The film’s first look depicts Rani using Hindi abuses in the trailer of the film, which deals with model Jessica Lal’s murder case. Jessica was shot dead by Manu Sharma, son of a Haryana politician, in 1999. Rani said she didn’t have to go an extra mile to play the role in ‘No One Killed Jessica’, which also features Vidya Balan.
Set in Delhi, the film follows the trials and tribulations of the case as it was closed by the courts after they claimed there wasn’t enough evidence to reprimand the accusers. This led to a nationwide protest which forced the Indian courts to take another look at the case. Jessica Lal was a model who lived in Delhi and was murdered at a party. Onlookers pointed to a top politician’s son and while the case took years to solve, justice was finally served. Rani Mukerji plays the role of an investigative TV journalist and Vidya Balan portrays the role of Sabrina Lal, Jessica’s sister. A fresh face has been selected to play Jessica Lal.
