Bollywood movie ‘Udaan’ is the first official selection from India in seven years at the Cannes International Film Festival. The film is a creation by debutant director Vikramaditya Motwane, who has noteworthy experience as a film-maker. He started off as an assistant on a television talk show and then made the big leap to feature films by assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali on ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ and ‘Devdas’. He also worked with directors like Deepa Mehta and Anurag Kashyap, who is also the producer of Udaan. The film reflects a part of Vikramaditya’s own life. The film is scheduled for a release on 16^th July.

According to Vikramaditya, Udaan is the story of a young boy, wanting to break away from the mundane shackles. The protagonist Rohan, after being abandoned for eight years in a boarding school, returns to the small industrial town of Jamshedpur and finds himself closeted with an authoritarian father and a younger half brother who he didn’t even know existed. Forced to work in his father’s steel factory and study engineering against his wishes, he tries to create a life of his own within the parameters set for him and pursue his dream of being a writer.

Vikramaditya’s director friend, Anurag Kashyap wanted to produce the film ever since he read the first draft of the script. After years of trying to get a producer for this film, Kashyap and another friend raised enough money that allowed Vikramaditya to go ahead and make the film. Vikramaditya calls Udaan a labour of love and is full of praises for the cast and crew of the film for their unstinting support and rock solid confidence in him!

Indian history has been revised time and again on celluloid, but debutant director Rakesh Ranjan Kumar moves into a global canvas with ‘Dear Friend Hitler’ to capture the last few days of the Nazi dictator in his Berlin bunker after his downfall in 1945. It shows Hitler in his underground bunker, his insecurities, his charisma, his paranoia, and portrays his relationship with his close associates during the last few days of his life. Though set in the backdrop of the Second World War,‘Dear Friend Hitler’ is not a war film. Instead, it focuses on the positive side of Hitler’s personality and how he indirectly contributed towards the Indian independence and his love for India.

Veteran actor Anupam Kher was the first choice of director Rakesh Ranjan Kumar to play the role of the Nazi leader. But Kher opted out of the project as soon as he came to know that the film had sparked off outrage in the Jewish community. He distanced himself from the project as it was creating ill-will amongst his fans. The film has actress Neha Dhupia play Hitler’s secretary, long time companion and wife, Eva Braun while director Rakesh Ranjan Kumar is hopeful about Kher changing his mind. The film is expected to go on the floors next month as announced during the launch of the film at Novotel in Mumbai on 9th June 2010.

Clearing the air about all the controversy it generated, the director of the film said that the film does not glorify Hitler but depicts Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi as the hero. It shows the difference in ideologies of the two great leaders. Rakesh Ranjan Kumar further added that all the controversy that is arising is due to the confusion about the script.

Bollywood Film LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA Review

The new Bollywood film, Love , Sex Aur Dhokha (LSD) is director Dibakar Banerjee’s third provocative film. It is the first ever Bollywood film to have the word SEX in its title, which makes the title very explosive. The film is a take on changing times in urban India! LSD tries to make a statement about the open-ness in today’s urban society and the lack of privacy in today’s age, due to cell phones, spy cams, sting operations and MMS. This is Ekta Kapoor’s first foray into experimental cinema. It’s courageous, bold, disturbing, realistic and yet entertaining – either you will love it or hate it: you just cannot have a neutral take on this movie!

Love Sex Aur Dhokha

Love Sex Aur Dhokha consists of three love stories. The first story is about a film school student Rahul (Anshuman Jha) who shoots a movie and falls in love with the heroine Shruti (Shruti) and they get married, with dreams of a happy future. This track is a satire on Bollywood relationships. The next story is about Adarsh (Raj Kumar Yadav) who installs secret cameras in the changing room of a mall and plans to make a porn film using the clips. Adarsh pretends to be in love with the plain Jane salesgirl in the mall Rashmi (Neha Chauhan), who he actually plans to use, courtesy MMS scandals.

The final story has a sting journalist Prabhat who attempts a series of failed suicides. He meets Naina, who is also trying to commit suicide. She had been promised a music video by Loki Local, a Hip Hop pop star, who uses her. But the video finally went to a Russian blonde. Prabhat and Naina decide to do a sting operation. The third story bears reference to the existing casting couch and how people opt for it as a shortcut to money and fame.

It takes a while for the viewer to get a grasp of this new Hindi film, considering the constantly moving cameras. It is a digital film with the hidden camera playing a character itself, another first in Bollywood! But the screenplay and story are so engrossing that it is easy to absorb this technique of story telling!

Director Dibakar Banerjee’s choice of subject, dwelling on an unbeaten path and decision to shoot the film on a digital format deserves kudos and so does the interweaving of the three stories. There’s just one song in the film – the title track – which is already rising in the charts due to its catchy tune and filming. The DoP [Nikos Andritsakis] has done a great job with a lot of innovation and creativity with the film being shot on a handycam, security cameras placed in shops, underwater cameras and spy cameras. Editing by Namrata Rao is just perfect.

The reality in the film called for new faces and the performances of each and every member of the cast are superb. Anshuman Jha [as Rahul], Shruti [as Shruti], Raj Kumar Yadav [as Adarsh], Neha Chauhan [as Rashmi], Amit Sial [as Prabhat], Arya Devdutta [as Naina] and Herry Tangri [as Loki Local] are amazing actors and have a bright future.

On the whole, LSD is original, innovative and ground-breaking cinema, which will shock and provoke you. The explosive title and content should make this low-cost film amass a decent box office collection!

New Bollywood Movie ‘Kites’ Review

Much hype and puff is created around every film before its release these days. And Kites, the latest Hrihtik Roshan starrer is no exception! The film was touted on the basis of its monumental budget and the big names associated with it. Produced by Rakesh Roshan, the film is scripted and directed by none other than Anurag Basu. The film has Barbara Mori, a Mexican actress, Kangana Ranaut, Kabir Bedi and Nicholas Brown.

Kites Review

The film revolves around J and Natasha. The film starts with J as a wounded man lying in the arid Mexican deserts, on a quest to look for his lost love, Natasha, while he himself is a wanted man. J and Natasha are two street smart fraudsters, all set to marry into a rich and powerful family of Las Vegas just for money. All is fine till J and Natasha meet each other and fall in love. Their gold digging schemes go for a toss as they escape only to invite the wrath and enmity of the family they were going to con! J and Natasha do not understand each other’s languages as J speaks Hindi and English while Natasha speaks only Spanish!! But as they say love knows no languages and no boundaries. J and Natasha embark on an escape trail with adventures galore!

The film has received a luke warm response so far. The film is Hrithik’s baby all the way! With his stunning looks and spectacular performance, Kites is certainly soaring high because of Hrithik, who spells magic in his role as J. Hrithik alone makes the film worth a watch. The look and feel of the film is certainly like a Hollywood film, but the film follows the beaten track and has nothing much to offer in terms of content. Anurag Basu has done a fair job, but this is not one his best. The only different aspect of the story is the ending, which is truly emotional. Most of the dialogues in the film are either in English or Spanish with Hindi sub titles. This may not work well with the traditional audiences.

Hrithik Roshan in Kites

There are few more loose ends in the film. A talent like Kangana has been wasted with a half-baked track. Kabir Bedi disappears after a while. Nicholas Brown as Kabir bedi’s son and Barbara’s fiance’ does complete justice to his role as the villain. Hrithik and Barbara’s on-screen chemistry is crackling and fresh.

Rajesh Roshan’s music is plain and staid. Salim-Suleman have done a good job with the background score which adds to the effect of the action packed sequences. Ayananka Bose’s cinematography is top notch and simply brilliant! All said and done, Kites is an out and out Hrithik movie. He is the lifeline of the movie and rises much above the script as an actor.

Amit manages to read Priya’s diary and comes to know of her dreams. He projects himself accordingly and Priya falls for him. Things go from hunky dory to higgledy piggledy when Priya finds out the truth about Amit. She decides to part ways, but while doing so she writes down their names on a currency note and a book with the faith that if they are destined to be together, the note and the book will surely come back to them.

This new Hindi film is now slated for a release on the 9^th of July, 2010. The film is directed by Satish Kaushik and produced by Boney Kapoor. Himesh Reshammiya has lent music to the film. Music lovers can look forward to some good Bollywood songs in this film. ‘Kuch to Baaki Hai…’ is one of the Hindi songs of this latest Bollywood film which is making its way up the charts much before its release.

The Hindi version, ‘Raavan’ boasts of a mega starcast, featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and superstar of the south, Vikram. The film, inspired by the legendary epic Ramayan, is mythology in a new mould. It revolves around one of the central characters of the epic, Ravana.

The story is about Dev Pratap Sharma (Vikram), a cop who falls in love with a beautiful dancer, Ragini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan). They get married and move to a new place of posting, Lal Maati, a small town in North India, where the word of law is not the police but a young tribal, Beera (Abhishek Bachchan). Beera is out to seek vengeance for the humiliation caused to his sister by Dev. And Dev wants to hunt down Beera to bring back law and order to Lal Maati. So that has both Dev and Beera on their own battling tracks.

Beera goes to Dev’s house to kidnap him, but kidnaps his wife Ragini instead and takes her to the jungles. What transpires afterwards is sufficient to drag the trio into the deep and scary jungles which become a battleground.

The film explores the complex man-woman relationship as Beera and Ragini fall in love while Ragini is held captive. The film is set for an unexpected twist hereon as truth surfaces with a reversal of roles of the good and the evil! The film has Suhasini, Mani Ratnam’s wife making her debut on the silver screen while Govinda plays Dev’s aide, a character inspired by Hanuman. Bhojpuri star and TV actor Ravi Kissen plays Abhishek’s helping hand while newcomer Nikhil Dwivedi is a cop.

The commercial has set the web circuit ablaze as Bipasha appears topless in a Lotto commercial! The ad which was shot eleven years ago in 1999, has unearthed after a long span. The ad was revealed on YouTube. The ad is directed by Ken Nahoum while the art illustrator is Tommy Kane, who posted the ad online. The ad was a part of Bipasha’s modelling assignment while she was in New York and was meant for the international markets.
