New Hindi Film Udaan

Bollywood movie ‘Udaan’ is the first official selection from India in seven years at the Cannes International Film Festival. The film is a creation by debutant director Vikramaditya Motwane, who has noteworthy experience as a film-maker. He started off as an assistant on a television talk show and then made the big leap to feature films by assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali on ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ and ‘Devdas’. He also worked with directors like Deepa Mehta and Anurag Kashyap, who is also the producer of Udaan. The film reflects a part of Vikramaditya’s own life. The film is scheduled for a release on 16^th July.

According to Vikramaditya, Udaan is the story of a young boy, wanting to break away from the mundane shackles. The protagonist Rohan, after being abandoned for eight years in a boarding school, returns to the small industrial town of Jamshedpur and finds himself closeted with an authoritarian father and a younger half brother who he didn’t even know existed. Forced to work in his father’s steel factory and study engineering against his wishes, he tries to create a life of his own within the parameters set for him and pursue his dream of being a writer.

Vikramaditya’s director friend, Anurag Kashyap wanted to produce the film ever since he read the first draft of the script. After years of trying to get a producer for this film, Kashyap and another friend raised enough money that allowed Vikramaditya to go ahead and make the film. Vikramaditya calls Udaan a labour of love and is full of praises for the cast and crew of the film for their unstinting support and rock solid confidence in him!

Indian history has been revised time and again on celluloid, but debutant director Rakesh Ranjan Kumar moves into a global canvas with ‘Dear Friend Hitler’ to capture the last few days of the Nazi dictator in his Berlin bunker after his downfall in 1945. It shows Hitler in his underground bunker, his insecurities, his charisma, his paranoia, and portrays his relationship with his close associates during the last few days of his life. Though set in the backdrop of the Second World War,‘Dear Friend Hitler’ is not a war film. Instead, it focuses on the positive side of Hitler’s personality and how he indirectly contributed towards the Indian independence and his love for India.

Veteran actor Anupam Kher was the first choice of director Rakesh Ranjan Kumar to play the role of the Nazi leader. But Kher opted out of the project as soon as he came to know that the film had sparked off outrage in the Jewish community. He distanced himself from the project as it was creating ill-will amongst his fans. The film has actress Neha Dhupia play Hitler’s secretary, long time companion and wife, Eva Braun while director Rakesh Ranjan Kumar is hopeful about Kher changing his mind. The film is expected to go on the floors next month as announced during the launch of the film at Novotel in Mumbai on 9th June 2010.

The film has not gone down too well with the European media either as they felt that the film’s content glorifies Hitler. Clearing the air about all the controversy it generated, the director of the film said that the film does not glorify Hitler but depicts Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi as the hero. It shows the difference in ideologies of the two great leaders. Rakesh Ranjan Kumar further added that all the controversy that is arising is due to the confusion about the script.

The film is based on June 2009 murder of Bihar PWD engineer Yogendra Pandey who was killed by Bihar’s road mafia.

Akshay Kumar is well known in the industry for his Marathi speaking skills. This time he is putting it to good use as he plays Akshay plays a Marathi Manus, Sachin Tichkule in the film. Following the foot-steps of Sanjay Dutt and Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar will also debut as a singer in this film. He will be seen singing a song in Marathi, ‘Nana chi Taang’ which will be rephrased as ‘Teri Aisi Ki Taisi’ in Hindi. Ace music composer, Pritam is all set to create magic all over again with his lilting tunes. The song ‘Nana chi Taang’ a combination of rock and Maharashtrian music is bound to strike a chord with the masses and go on to top the charts!

The BOROPLUS Gold Awards -The 1st Global Indian Television Awards – is back this year! After rocking Mauritius in 2007 and Dubai in 2008, Vikas Kalantri of White Leaf Entertainment Media Pvt. Ltd. is all set to take it to yet another level in Mumbai. The event will be held in association with Maharashtra tourism. Bollywood Film LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA Review

The new Bollywood film, Love , Sex Aur Dhokha (LSD) is director Dibakar Banerjee’s third provocative film. It is the first ever Bollywood film to have the word SEX in its title, which makes the title very explosive. The film is a take on changing times in urban India! LSD tries to make a statement about the open-ness in today’s urban society and the lack of privacy in today’s age, due to cell phones, spy cams, sting operations and MMS. This is Ekta Kapoor’s first foray into experimental cinema. It’s courageous, bold, disturbing, realistic and yet entertaining – either you will love it or hate it: you just cannot have a neutral take on this movie!

Love Sex Aur Dhokha

Love Sex Aur Dhokha consists of three love stories. The first story is about a film school student Rahul (Anshuman Jha) who shoots a movie and falls in love with the heroine Shruti (Shruti) and they get married, with dreams of a happy future. This track is a satire on Bollywood relationships. The next story is about Adarsh (Raj Kumar Yadav) who installs secret cameras in the changing room of a mall and plans to make a porn film using the clips. Adarsh pretends to be in love with the plain Jane salesgirl in the mall Rashmi (Neha Chauhan), who he actually plans to use, courtesy MMS scandals.

The final story has a sting journalist Prabhat who attempts a series of failed suicides. He meets Naina, who is also trying to commit suicide. She had been promised a music video by Loki Local, a Hip Hop pop star, who uses her. But the video finally went to a Russian blonde. Prabhat and Naina decide to do a sting operation. The third story bears reference to the existing casting couch and how people opt for it as a shortcut to money and fame.

It takes a while for the viewer to get a grasp of this new Hindi film, considering the constantly moving cameras. It is a digital film with the hidden camera playing a character itself, another first in Bollywood! But the screenplay and story are so engrossing that it is easy to absorb this technique of story telling!

Director Dibakar Banerjee’s choice of subject, dwelling on an unbeaten path and decision to shoot the film on a digital format deserves kudos and so does the interweaving of the three stories. There’s just one song in the film – the title track – which is already rising in the charts due to its catchy tune and filming. The DoP [Nikos Andritsakis] has done a great job with a lot of innovation and creativity with the film being shot on a handycam, security cameras placed in shops, underwater cameras and spy cameras. Editing by Namrata Rao is just perfect.

The reality in the film called for new faces and the performances of each and every member of the cast are superb. Anshuman Jha [as Rahul], Shruti [as Shruti], Raj Kumar Yadav [as Adarsh], Neha Chauhan [as Rashmi], Amit Sial [as Prabhat], Arya Devdutta [as Naina] and Herry Tangri [as Loki Local] are amazing actors and have a bright future.

On the whole, LSD is original, innovative and ground-breaking cinema, which will shock and provoke you. The explosive title and content should make this low-cost film amass a decent box office collection!
